Nurse-Family Partnership Implementation Evaluation

The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) programme for supporting vulnerable, young first-time mothers was developed in the USA by Professor David Olds and has been subject to several randomised trials in the USA. It is being tested in 10 pilot sites in England, where it is called the Family-Nurse Partnership programme. The evaluation, conducted by Birkbeck over 2 years from April 2007 to March 2009, is formative, focusing primarily on the implementation of the model rather than outcomes for children and families. It will help judgments on whether the NFP model can be applied in England, and its cost. The evaluation is using multiple methods with multiple informants from three domains - the families, the workforce and the wider organisation of services. A mix of qualitative and quantitative methods is being used. The project is directed by Professor Jacqueline Barnes from the Institute for the Study of Children, Families and Social Issues and co-investigators are Mog Ball andPam Meadows.
